What is 'balance' and is it really necessary?" This may be a question which you ask yourself. The concept of having a balance life was not something I thought about until I was in college. I began to attend classes, such as Christian Manhood, in which I began to hear this teaching of "Balance." As the teaching progressed I realized that this was not teaching that I had not heard before but rather simply giving a name to something I had been taught my whole life.
My dad has been a preacher my entire life. He is a pastor and was in evangelism for a few years. I had the privilege of growing up in a house that was not built on extremes but rather on a balance. It has been said "It is better to be good at a lot of things rather than just being great at one" and that it what my parents taught me to do. The Word of God had preeminence in our home, but I was also taught the importance of many other qualities. I was taught the importance of having a good work ethic and learning many different trades; I was taught the importance of serving God and was able to work in many different areas of the ministry even at a young age. I am so thankful now for having been taught to be a well-rounded person.
Having balance in our lives is important for many reasons but I'll mention just a few.
1. It helps us to develop new relationships.
Many times the word "relationships" is used to refer mainly to marriage/dating relationships; however I will be using term to simply describe how we relate to others. As we learn new things and become more proficient in others we develop new areas in our lives that we can relate to others.
2. It helps us to advance the cause of Christ.
Paul said " I become all things to all men that I might win some." I find that most of the people who I have won to the Lord were won after our conversation had been turned from another topic to the topic of their soul's condition. I oftentimes find myself in a store talking to someone whom I have never met about a myriad of topics which then many times leads to me talking to them about their soul's condition. I am glad that I was taught to be well rounded so that I have these opportunities to talk about so great a topic of salvation.
3. It helps us to de-stress.
Life is filled with stress. This is a fact that we all hate to admit but we must live with the fact that it is true. I am one who when stressed likes to enjoy many different things that calm me and help me "de-stress."
Do you have balance in your life. Having balance in life is definitely something worth thinking about , Just a Thought. Thanks for reading.
